he Department of Energy (DOE) SMR Licensing Technical Support program uses taxpayer money to commercialize small modular reactors through cost-share agreements with nuclear industry partners in order develop SMR designs to meet Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) certification, licensing and siting requirements. The program is one of at least three ways DOE is supporting the development of SMRs. DOE originally chose two SMR designs to support through the process: the mPower by Babcock & Wilcox, and the Power Module model by NuScale, a company backed by Fluor Corporation. Only the Power Module continues to receive DOE funding.
