For the Grand Prairie Area Demonstration Project, the Army Corps of Engineers is constructing a pumping station and distribution system composed of a 650-mile long canal and pipeline network that would draw water from the White River to supply crops grown in the east-central portion of Arkansas. A century of unsustainable irrigation for rice farming in this part of the state has left the area’s main irrigation aquifer severely depleted and is now threatening the region’s deeper drinking water aquifer. The project would be a first step by the Corps into the agriculture irrigation business. Promoting water efficiency and conservation techniques on the area’s farms could serve as a viable alternative.
